A position is available for a Laboratory Manager in an academic research lab offering a collaborative environment with diverse expertise and methods. Our lab focuses on the specification of neural-cell fates and the control of tissue morphogenesis in the developing central nervous system, towards understanding injury response and developing strategies for tissue repair.
We are looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to be responsible for the organization and smooth running of the general lab, ensuring that required safety standards are met, overseeing and assisting in the maintenance of our personal animal colony, and supporting and assisting lab personnel with ongoing research projects as trained.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Ordering lab supplies, reagents, equipment, etc.
- Maintaining and replenishing lab supplies, including glassware, reagents, solutions, etc.
- Administrative duties including reconciling financial statements, filing, organizing lab supplies, etc.
- Shipping, receiving, and handling incoming and outgoing packages
- Maintenance of lab safety and protocols
- Ensuring Safety Data Sheets are up to date
- Safety orientation for onboarding of new lab members
- Maintaining clean working areas and ensuring equipment works properly
- Working closely with building services team with lab equipment repairs and other lab repair requests
- Overseeing the lab’s personal animal colony (e.g., ensuring animal numbers remain low, breeding animals are replaced at appropriate intervals, assisting with behavioural experiments)
- Assisting with the preparation of Animal Utilization Protocols (AUPs) and Research Ethics Board (REB) approvals
- Assisting with other experiments when required and time permitting (eg. RNA in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, tissue culture)
Requirements:
- Higher level degree (e.g., MSc, PhD) in a wet lab setting, with expertise in molecular biology, histology and/or biochemistry
- Experience as a Laboratory Technician or Manager
- Experience maintaining an animal colony, with experience in mouse behaviour considered an asset
- Excellent ability to multitask and prioritize tasks and work autonomously
- Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, and time management skills
- Superb interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work in a team environment is critical.
