The Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine, Regional Base Hospital Program, is responsible for providing medical oversight through certification, recertification, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement to approximately 3,400 paramedics employed by the following services:
- Beausoleil First Nation Paramedic Services
- County of Simcoe Paramedic Services
- Halton Region Paramedic Services
- Muskoka Paramedic Services
- Peel Regional Paramedic Services
- Rama First Nation Paramedic Services
- Toronto Paramedic Services
As Program Coordinator, Paramedic Practice, your focus will be on the efficient and effective operation of the assigned program, ensuring that all activities align with Sunnybrook's high standards of patient safety and care. You will supervise casual staff and assist in managing budget items related to the program focus. This role is pivotal in ensuring quality education, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement in pre-hospital setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead with a focus on patient safety, ensuring all activities align with recognized standards in pre-hospital care.
- Development and delivery of high-quality educational programs for paramedics, ensuring that certification, recertification, and continuing education processes are followed and incorporate strong quality assurance practices.
- Ensure that all medical and clinical program content is approved by the Medical Council for medical accuracy and relevance.
- Foster strong working relationships with paramedics, paramedic services, and key stakeholders to promote a culture of safety, education, and continuous improvement.
- Address regional challenges by providing recommendations to the Program Manager(s), Senior Manager, and Medical Directors for training strategies that respond to operational, educational, and certification needs.
- Provide leadership to peers, promoting a collaborative and patient-centered environment.
Reporting:
This position reports to the Senior Manager, Regional Base Hospital Program.
Summary of Duties:
- Ensure the efficient, timely, and safe delivery of paramedic initial certification Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), recertification, continuing medical education, and remedial education programs.
- Assist in developing regional goals and objectives to optimize program operations and maintain patient safety standards.
- Coordinate, develop, and facilitate educational programs for Primary and Advanced Care Paramedics.
- Provide formal and informal leadership to casual faculty, offering performance feedback and support.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and ensure recommendations are forwarded to the Program Manager.
- Keep the Program Manager informed of all program activities and operational matters.
- Execute quality management activities, ensuring patient care is consistently delivered according to the highest standards.
- Report and follow up on any abnormal incidents related to patient care, communication, or equipment, ensuring patient safety is prioritized.
- Maintain comprehensive records of all quality management activities.
- Participate in field trials, research, and paramedic field evaluations to enhance the quality of care.
- Serve as a resource for paramedics, paramedic services, and allied healthcare providers on pre-hospital care, policies, medical directives, and training.
- Implement and evaluate operational policies and procedures.
- Attend Regional Paramedic Service, Base Hospital, and Provincial committee meetings or working groups as required.
- Represent the program in various committees and meetings, promoting patient safety and program initiatives.
- Deliver faculty training and participate in staff meetings as necessary.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Primary, Advanced or Critical Care Paramedic (or related discipline) with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
- Baccalaureate (preferred) or equivalent Community College diploma in Health Sciences.
- Certificate in Adult Education (preferred).
- Knowledge of current legislation and standards pertaining to pre-hospital care and emergency health services.
- Strong leadership, facilitation, and coaching abilities.
- Exceptional presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven analytical skills and the ability to make sound judgment calls.
- Experience in process improvement methodologies.
- Strong organizational skills with an ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Commitment to patient and co-worker safety.
- Experience with low/mid fidelity simulation devices is preferred.
