The Department of Medical Physics in the Odette Cancer Centre (OCC) at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Ontario, has an opening for a summer student.

This position is the H.E. Johns Studentship, funded in part by Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario).  The position is open to undergraduates in physics or related disciplines in a recognized Canadian university program. The studentship is awarded to a student who is Canadian or a permanent resident with high academic standing (a minimum of GPA 3.30, as calculated by the applicant’s home university) and has demonstrated interest in the field of radiotherapy medical physics as a possible future career.

The successful applicant will work under the supervision of a medical physicist on a research or technical development project.  Projects typically include physics measurements, data analysis, programming, and technical report writing; a full description of the project will be available at the time of interview. 

Undergraduate students in physics, engineering science, engineering, computer science, and related fields are encouraged to apply.  Students will work in a technical setting with medical physicists, and will learn about radiological physics, medical applications of physics, medical imaging and radiotherapy physics; and, develop skills in data collection and analysis, technical report writing, and scientific presentation.

The Radiation Treatment Program at the Odette Cancer Centre is the busiest radiation treatment program in Canada and employs twenty-four medical physicists.  Medical physicists in the Radiation Treatment Program support clinical service by managing the treatment delivery infrastructure and quality assurance required for the most technologically advanced radiation treatments.  The also undertake research into radiological physics, implement new technology for patient treatment, and teach in the University of Toronto programs in radiation oncology and medical physics.
