Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is a nationally-leading and internationally-recognized academic health care centre based at several sites in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Our team delivers expert, compassionate care to patients from across Ontario; wide ranging and sometimes unique education to thousands of learners each year; and research and implementation of innovations that invent the future of health care. Since our first patient in 1946, Sunnybrook has evolved and expanded to become a network of integrated sites and campuses representing the full continuum of care including pre-hospital, acute, and post-acute and key specialty services for Ontario.

Sunnybrook is embarking on a multi-year digital, clinical transformation project to implement a new health information system (HIS) across all campuses and satellite sites, through Project REACH. The project is a pillar of enabling exemplary patient experience and quality of care and therefore this is not solely an information technology initiative, but one founded in clinical transformation and care redesign. Led by the Clinical Informatics Team, Project REACH will strive to enhance patient care, streamline clinical workflows and support our clinicians.

Summary of Duties:

We are looking for dynamic and experienced professionals to serve as Project Directors for our Health Information System (HIS) implementation - Project REACH. Reporting to the Project REACH leadership team (Director, Clinical Informatics; Director, Information Technology; Director, Information Services; Director, Health Records; and Director, Project REACH), the Project Directors are the primary point of contact throughout the implementation process for their respective work stream. Work streams currently include the below but are subject to change:

 

  • Inpatient/Clinical
  • Outpatient/Clinical
  • Ancillary & Specialty
  • Patient Access
  • Applications & Interfaces
  • Technical Infrastructure, Data Analytics & BI
     

Project Directors will work in close collaboration with the HIS vendor’s work stream leads to ensure alignment, timely decision-making, and effective risk and issue management.
 

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for your designated work stream throughout the HIS implementation process
  • Lead the development of project plans and determine required project resource requirements
  • Work within and manage governance structures required for successful project implementation
  • Report to and work collaboratively with the Project REACH leadership team and other stakeholders
  • Oversee and report on the status of a portfolio of projects against implementation plan
  • Accountable for assigned project budgets, developing and monitoring cash flows, management and oversight of project assets/inventory, and ensuring accurate reporting to senior leadership
  • Ensure appropriate communication with both internal as well as external stakeholders and work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure proper communication and alignment across all work streams
  • Collaborate with  HIS vendor to ensure successful project completion, including validating design decisions, ensure data collection meets Sunnybrook’s standards, and escalate risks or issues as needed
  • Lead a team of Clinical Informatics Specialists and IT Analysts responsible for facilitating work stream meetings, ensuring all stakeholders are informed and engaged in decision-making processes.
  • Manage workload across the project team and help to remove obstacles to their success
  • Ensure that implementation activities adhere to timelines and organizational standards, and that any deviations or challenges are identified and addressed promptly
  • Support data migration, validation, and testing efforts within your area, ensuring smooth integration with Sunnybrook’s existing systems
  • Monitor progress, document decisions, and track risk mitigation strategies in conjunction with project management office
  • Provide regular updates and reports to project leadership, ensuring that all key milestones are achieved
  • Support organization change management and readiness

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Healthcare, Information Systems, Nursing, etc.), or equivalent education and experience required
  • Masters of Science in Health Informatics, or related fields preferred
  • 5-10 years of recent related experience in complex organization-wide IT implementations
  • Experience with HIS implementations strongly preferred
  • Expertise in one or more HIS work streams such as Patient Access, Clinical Documentation, technical
  • Strong project management skills with a focus on meeting deadlines, managing risks, and ensuring accountability
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is considered an asset
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams
  • Experience leading and managing a diverse team that includes clinicians, technical and project management staff
  • Proven ability to lead and influence in a complex, dynamic environment
  • Strong negotiation and vendor relations experience required
  • Familiarity with healthcare operational workflows and regulatory requirements is an asset
  • Solid troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills required
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, project milestones and deliverables using standard project management tools
  • Ability to adapt to change and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job
