Summary of Duties

The Advanced Practice Radiation Therapist functions as a self-regulated independent practitioner for all Head and Neck patients within the disease site group. The Advanced Practice role is a registered Radiation Therapist (RTT) who has acquired advanced knowledge and skills through a combination of formal courses (Master’s Degree), workplace learning, and professional development activities.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a radiation therapy expert and liaison with all interprofessional members of the Head & Neck (H&N) disease site group.
  • Collaborate across intra and interprofessional teams to lead and contribute research and quality improvement projects within the H&N disease site group.
  • Provide ongoing support for patients treated for H&N cancer from initial visit through active treatment and into survivorship.
  • Lead and participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of educational activities and materials designed to meet the learning needs of patients, families and caregivers regarding all aspects of their radiation therapy treatment as it relates to their H&N cancer.
  • Provide leadership, education and support to RTTs in planning and treatment delivery in the implementation of new protocols, treatment techniques, and equipment within the H&N disease site group.
  • Identify opportunities for supplemental staff training and collaborate with the education team to develop and implement targeted learning opportunities.
  • Provide technical and dosimetric consultation to RTT staff regarding image guidance and adaptive treatment decisions.
  • Provide technical and dosimetric consultation as it relates to anticipated/experienced side effects and propose preventative/supportive interventions.
  • Ensure Quality Assurance procedures are maintained for all aspects of patients care.

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Successful completion of a baccalaureate from an accredited radiation therapy program
  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO).
  • Minimum 5 years experience as a RTT.
  • Current CPR certificate is required. 
  • Completion or enrolled in a Master’s level or higher degree are considered an asset (the successful candidate will be expected to complete a Master’s degree as condition of acceptance of position).
  • Willing to work towards APRT(T) certification.
  • Have or be willing to seek an academic appointment with the University of Toronto Department of Radiation Oncology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and within an interprofessional team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Person Centred Care approaches and principles.
  • Strong knowledge base of H&N disease processes, radiation treatment techniques, capabilities of radiation therapy technologies, use of accessory equipment and immobilization devices, and management of radiation therapy related sife effects are considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in teaching, research or quality improvement, project development and management, and effective presentation skills will be viewed as an asset.
