Summary of Duties

Reporting to the Manager of Patient and Family Education, The Patient Education Specialist will lead and support patient education initiatives at the Odette Cancer Centre, including managing e-Care (electronic care) patient education content. This role will ensure that patient-facing digital education tools are current, accessible, and aligned with the evolving needs of the cancer program and the upcoming patient portal.

The Specialist will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing patient education resources within e-Care, supporting the transition to a new patient portal, and supporting patient facing use of web based tools including e-Care. In addition, the role will support the development of both current and emerging patient education tools and contribute to the delivery of patient education programming, including those supported by volunteers in the Patient Education Learning Centre.

 

Duties include:

  • Lead the maintenance of e-Care patient education content
  • Audit and manage e-Care content, ensuring accuracy, relevance, and alignment with patient education tools
  • Identify and support requirements for e-care functionality and patient education within the future patient portal, including content migration and development
  • Develop, review, and update patient education materials across digital platforms (e-Care, website, and future portal)
  • Providing education to patients/families within the PEARL on e-Care, MyChart and web site
  • Developing patient education tools and resources for the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre Cancer Program.
  • Oversee Patient Education Learning Centre operations
    • Training and supporting volunteers delivering patient education programs
    • Maintaining and updating educational resources
    • Triaging patient education inquiries to appropriate team members
  • Participating in various committees and clinical team meetings to ensure appropriate knowledge transfer and exchange

 

Qualifications/Skill

  • Minimum Bachelor of Arts/Health Sciences or equivalent required
  • Master’s in health administration/health promotion or similar preferred
  • Preferred 3 -5 years related experience in patient education in a hospital or health care setting
  • Preferred experience working with volunteers
  • Preferred knowledge and experience in health literacy
  • Demonstrated experience developing patient education resources
  • Preferred experience in research and evaluation
  • Understanding of and ability to apply principles of adult learning techniques and excellence in education program development, implementation and evaluation
  • Experience working with web site patient education tools
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to provide appropriate feedback
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills, demonstrating the ability to network with a variety of stakeholders and professional disciplines
  • Familiar with and has a person centred focus
  • Highly self-directed with the ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize workload while paying close attention to detail and timelines
  • Experience working with different technologies which support patient education
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
