Position Summary: 

The Physician Assistant (PA) is a hospital employee who bridges the gap between physicians and the hospital and as such has dual responsibilities and reporting. The PA operates under the license of the Primary Supervising Physician, Medical Directives and in verbal discussion with the supervisor, and operationally reports to the Patient Care Manager.  

Working collaboratively with other members of the interprofessional care team, the PA: 

  • Provides direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient care settings, including participating in specialized clinics 

  • Participates in daily rounds, performs clinical assessments, documents findings, reviews imaging and laboratory results and formulates a treatment plan based on investigation results 

  • Conducts comprehensive patient histories and physical examinations 

  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests within scope and under supervision 

  • Orders, prescribes and administers orthosis, orthotics, braces and other spinal devices 

  • Collaborates with Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, consulting services and the inter-professional team to support seamless care planning and timely transitions across the care continuum 

  • Supports daily communication of care plans with patients and families 

  • Assists in referral and coordination of community and specialty services  

  • Collaborates with the team on quality and patient safety initiatives 

  • Engages in quality improvement, research, and academic initiatives within the program 

  • Support health promotion and disease prevention strategies 

  • Monitors and reports on Key Performance Indicators and clinical outcomes 

 

Qualifications and Skills 

  • Current Registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) 

  • Certified or awaiting test results through the Physician Assistant’s Certification Council (PACC) or National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) 

  • Membership with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants 

  • Experience in orthopedics or neurosurgery preferred  

  • Current ACLS & ATLS preferred 

  • Strong clinical judgement, complex decision-making skills, excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills 

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within inter-professional teams 

  • Collaborative approach to teaching, learning and conflict management 

  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and quality improvement
