We currently have a temporary full-time (~10 month) Pharmacist 1 position within the Odette Cancer Centre Pharmacy, supporting patients receiving systemic cancer therapy and other oncology care.

The Pharmacist is an integral member of the interdisciplinary oncology team and provides safe, evidence-informed, patient-centred medication management across the cancer care continuum. The role includes responsibilities within the Odette Cancer Centre retail pharmacy and systemic therapy program, with opportunities to develop expertise in oncology pharmacy practice.

 

Key responsibilities include:

•  Reviewing, assessing, clarifying, modifying, and verifying medication and systemic therapy orders, including orders within the oncology computerized prescriber order entry (CPOE) system.

•  Providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care, including assessment of medication therapy, identification and resolution of drug therapy problems, medication reconciliation, and monitoring for treatment-related toxicities and supportive care needs.

•  Providing patient education and counselling related to anticancer therapy, supportive care medications, medication adherence, adverse-effect prevention and management, and safe medication use.

•  Dispensing medications and providing oversight of medication distribution activities performed by pharmacy technicians.

•  Responding to drug information and medication-related questions from patients, caregivers, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare team.

•  Collaborating with the interdisciplinary oncology team to optimize medication therapy and support safe and effective cancer treatment.

•  Reviewing and verifying systemic therapy treatment plans and associated supportive care. Independent IV systemic therapy order verification will be incorporated into the role following completion of training and demonstration of competency.

•  Supporting safe medication practices and adherence to applicable standards, policies, procedures, and oncology-specific medication safety requirements.

•  Providing supervision, teaching, and mentorship to pharmacy students and other learners, and contributing to the education of pharmacy and multidisciplinary staff.

•  Participating in quality improvement, medication safety, practice advancement, and other departmental or oncology program initiatives.

•  Participating in hospital, departmental, and program committees as required.

The successful candidate will work in a dynamic, high-volume oncology environment and will be expected to develop increasing independence across the various components of oncology pharmacy practice through a structured orientation and competency-based training process.

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Current registration and licensure in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists required.
  • Previous oncology pharmacy experience is preferred; experience within the Odette Cancer Centre Pharmacy is an asset.
  • Experience with systemic anticancer therapy, oncology supportive care, or complex medication management is an asset.
  • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to medication safety, patient-centred care, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing demands in a fast-paced, high-volume clinical environment.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with a strong commitment to accuracy and safe medication practices.
  • Self-motivated, dependable, adaptable, and able to take initiative.
