Job Overview

The Holland Bone & Joint Program at Sunnybrook Research Institute (fully affiliated with the University of Toronto) is seeking an energetic and engaged Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate to work on our Expert Surgical Teams project. This initiative aims to improve patient care by enhancing how multidisciplinary teams work together in the operating room. Using a data driven approach, the project includes assessment, education, human factors, and quality improvement. The candidate will lead the day-to-day operations of a dynamic and collegial research team (overseen by Dr. Markku Nousiainen and Dr. Cari Whyne). This includes collaboration with clinical champions, graduate students, residents and medical students, with opportunities for direct mentorship and independent research. As the project expands, there is increasing opportunity for global collaboration in the building of expert surgical teams.

 

Summary of Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Work on the development of grants and study protocols.
  • Lead the development and evaluation of assessment tools and training interventions.
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data in preparation for publication and presentation.
  • Work independently and mentor trainees (graduate students, surgical residents) and research staff.
  • Facilitate and ensure continuity in research projects.
  • Present at national and international conferences.

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD (received in past 5 years) in health professions assessment and/or education, human factors, or a related field
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task, manage time, and adapt to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines
  • Experience preparing research protocols and conducting research with human participants
  • Proficiency in organizing, managing, coding, and analyzing quantitative data (SPSS, R, NVivo)
  • Experience with qualitative / mixed methods research, health professions training or human factors engineering as it applies to healthcare settings would be an asset
