Sunnybrook is seeking a Project Manager, Artificial Intelligence. Full-time and part-time arrangements will be considered. Artificial Intelligence is identified in Sunnybrook's Invent 2030 Strategic Plan as a key Digital Health and AI enabler. With established governance, a growing portfolio of AI applications, and a four-initiative enterprise roadmap, Sunnybrook is advancing the responsible adoption of AI across the organization. This role will build and manage the operational foundation for that work by supporting AI governance, establishing robust processes to oversee and sustain AI applications, and partnering with initiative leaders to measure and understand impact. The objective is clear: an AI portfolio defined not by the number of initiatives undertaken, but by demonstrable improvements in patient care, health system performance, and value.
We are looking for a health care project manager who brings structure to emerging, fast-moving work, is comfortable with AI and digital health concepts, and can translate between clinical, technical and executive audiences. This role will report to the Executive Vice President, Programs, People & Leadership (executive sponsor for AI), and will engage with the Senior Leadership Team, AI governance committees, Research, Program Chiefs, Operations Directors, Digital Health and Information Services, Privacy, Legal, Risk, Cybersecurity, Finance, initiative owners, vendors and external partners.
- AI Governance Support:
- Coordinate the AI Executive Strategy Committee, AI Implementation Committee and Program AI Forum, including agendas, materials, decision and action logs, and follow-through
- Work with Information Services to build on current processes and enhance the intake pathway for new AI proposals, so each moves smoothly through clinical, privacy, security, ethics, legal and procurement review to a clear decision
- Maintain governance documentation (terms of reference, policies, standards, approval criteria and risk tiering) and keep it current as practice evolves
- Prepare concise reporting for the Senior Leadership Team and the Digital Committee of the Board of Directors
- Monitor the evolving regulatory, privacy and standards landscape for AI in health care and flag implications for Sunnybrook
- AI Portfolio Management:
- Work with Information Services to enhance the existing enterprise inventory of AI applications in use and in development (Point, Enterprise and Scaled Solutions), providing greater information and clarity on owner, purpose, risk tier, status, cost and contract dates
- Design and run a lifecycle process covering intake, pilot, evaluation, scale, ongoing monitoring and retirement
- Lead a regular review cadence with owners to confirm each application remains safe, effective and valuable, and recommend whether to scale, fix or retire it
- Track vendor contracts, renewals, product changes and embedded AI features in existing systems, in partnership with Procurement, Privacy and Cybersecurity
- Value and Performance Measurement:
- Partner with initiative owners, before launch, to define the problem being solved, the baseline, and a small set of indicators across Sunnybrook’s three value domains: quality, experience for patients and staff, and cost
- Develop a standard benefits realization framework and an enterprise AI value dashboard, working with Decision Support and Finance to validate data
- Support post-implementation monitoring for performance drift, equity impacts and unintended consequences, with clinical leads and Quality & Patient Safety
- Report results to governance committees with candour, including where initiatives are not delivering, so decisions are grounded in evidence
- Roadmap Initiative Support:
- Provide project management support to the executive leads of the four enterprise initiatives: AI-Enabled Capacity Management, AI-Powered System Navigation, Targeted Clinical AI, and Finance Transformation around SAP
- Maintain an integrated roadmap view of milestones, interdependencies (data, infrastructure, vendors, workforce) and risks, escalating appropriately
- Produce consolidated roadmap status reporting for the Senior Leadership Team
- Change Management and Engagement:
- Support initiative owners with adoption planning, including workflow redesign, training, communication and feedback loops
- Support the executive leads accountable for AI literacy for all those that interact at Sunnybrook including Physicians, staff, volunteers and our broader patient community.
- Maintain a central internal resource for staff and physicians: approved tools, how to bring forward an idea, and guidance on safe use
- Coordinate Sunnybrook’s participation in external AI networks and partnerships, and capture lessons learned to share internally and across the system
Qualifications/Skills
- Master’s degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, Health Informatics or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Minimum 3 years of project management experience in a hospital or health care setting; experience with digital health, clinical informatics or technology implementation is an asset
- Working knowledge of AI and machine learning concepts and their application in health care; hands-on comfort with generative AI tools (a technical or data science background is not required)
- Demonstrated experience developing performance measures, KPIs and benefits realization frameworks
- Experience supporting senior committees and governance processes
- Familiarity with health privacy (PHIPA), risk management and clinical technology governance
- Project management certification (e.g., PMP) and/or change management certification (e.g., Prosci) an asset
- High level of initiative and self-direction, with comfort in situations where the goal or the process to achieve it is unclear
- Ability to manage multiple, complex initiatives within tight timeframes
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to distill complexity for executive decision making
