Professorship in Perioperative and Pain Medicine

The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, is seeking applicants for the inaugural Professorship in Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto. The successful candidate must hold or be eligible to hold a full-time clinical (MD) appointment within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The term of the Professorship position is 5 years with the opportunity for one 5-year renewal following a favourable review as per the Policy of Endowed and Limited Term Chairs, Professorships, Distinguished Scholars and Program Initiatives.

The Professorship in Perioperative and Pain Medicine is based at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Sunnybrook HSC).

Applications will be accepted until November 30th, or until filled. The position start date is March 1st, 2025, or a mutually agreed upon date.

Through research and scholarly activities, the Professorship holder will position the Department of Anesthesia as a global leader in knowledge generation and translation in the anesthesia, perioperative and pain sciences. Specifically, the candidate will establish and lead a research program in perioperative and pain medicine with a focus on investigating and generating evidence-based knowledge, bridging the gap between scientific research and clinical practice that reduces perioperative morbidity, shapes best practices and improves patient outcomes.

The Professorship holder will build, integrate, and strengthen the existing team’s efforts, champion collaborative and integrative research, create a transdisciplinary research team, increase institutional engagement on perioperative and pain care pathways, and establish multidisciplinary partnerships between the Department of Anesthesia at Sunnybrook HSC and University of Toronto. The Professorship holder will contribute to the Department’s research council leadership and administrative activities equivalent to departmental/hospital/professional committees.

The Professorship holder will also collaborate with and leverage the expertise of Principal Investigators and Clinician Scientists in the Department of Anesthesia to foster knowledge exchange and design joint projects to support early-career investigators and the anesthesia research program. The successful candidate is also anticipated to bridge the gap between basic science and clinical practice by translating pre-clinical discoveries into advancements in perioperative care, providing leadership to a graduate student program and mentorship to junior investigators.

The candidate will be expected to promote a research culture within the Department of Anesthesia, facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations across Sunnybrook HSC, the University of Toronto, and establishing national and international collaborations.

Education and Qualifications

We welcome applicants working in any research domain directly relevant to anesthesia sciences and perioperative or pain medicine, from basic molecular mechanisms to population health. Anesthesiologists with strong records of translational research related to anesthesiology, including disciplines such as pain medicine, critical care, neuroscience, echocardiography, clinical pharmacology, perioperative analytics and personalized medicine, are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate must have a strong research focus and hold either an MD or an MD/MSC/PhD in a related discipline with significant expertise in anesthesia and/or perioperative and pain research. As a practicing clinician, they must hold or be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario.

The role will involve active leadership, nationally and internationally, to advance anesthesia research, perioperative care and pain management strategies and their impact on patient outcomes.

The candidate’s excellence in scholarly achievement should be evidenced by national and international collaborations.

The candidate should have:

  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications in preclinical and/or clinical research.
  • A track record of collaborative science, productivity, excellence and leadership is essential.
  • Proficiency in research mentorship and/or laboratory organization (i.e., mentoring students, residents, fellows and research staff).

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

Preference will be given to candidates with current Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funding or who complement one or more of Sunnybrook’s strategic research priorities (https://sunnybrook.ca/research/content/?page=sri-strategic-plan). This position will report to the Department Chief and University Department Chair.

The Department offers extensive resources, including access to the Anesthesia Clinical Research Team, Acute Pain Service, Chronic Pain Research Program, and Sunnybrook Canadian Simulation Centre.

The remuneration of the Professorship holder will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Position will be based at Sunnybrook HSC, and the holder is expected to become a member of the Sunnybrook HSC academic practice plan. The holder will be entitled to additional support commensurate with academic and clinical activities.

Applications will be accepted until November 30, 2024, or until the position is filled.
