  • Summary of Duties:

    The Speech-Language Pathologist is responsible for carrying out assessments, treatment and for ongoing evaluation in a busy inpatient and outpatient programs.  The Speech-Language Pathologist will provide care for a diverse patient population. Patient populations that require speech-language pathology services include burns, neurological rehab, stroke, oncology, amputee, multiple trauma, and orthopedic populations.

     

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Assess, interview and observe patients and complete special tests and measurements to formulate clinical diagnoses and implement customized speech-language pathology programs.
    2. Based on the analysis of examination findings, select and implement a treatment program to achieve rehabilitation goals.
    3. Manage a patient caseload in relation to the referral base including Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and Motor Vehicle Collision referrals and Independent Assessments.
    4. Document therapeutic progresses in the patient's medical record and discuss treatment progress with members of the therapeutic team.
    5. Complete assessment and progress reports for clients funded through the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and Auto Insurance companies in a timely manner.
    6. Educate the patient and family members to reinforce treatment programs.
    7. Participate in team building, weekly team rounds, family meetings as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
    8. Other reasonable duties as assigned.
    9. Be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of employees, patients, Sisters, students, volunteers, physicians and visitors including but not limited to:  compliance with the safety standards of the Hospital and applicable legislation.
    10. Conduct their work in a safe manner; prevention, identification and reporting of safety issues and problems; taking corrective action, where possible; attendance at safety meetings / training / updates in accordance with the Hospital’s standards.

     

    Qualifications/Skills

    1. Successful completion of a Master’s degree from an accredited University.
    2. Current registration in good standing with CASLPO.
    3. Minimum of two years experience required in a similar setting (neuro rehab population) preferred.
    4. Knowledge and experience with the adult neurology patient and dysphasia management are assets. 
    5. Experience in writing medical reports for WSIB and auto insurance companies is an asset. 
    6. Experience with videofluoroscopic swallow examinations an asset.
    7. Demonstrated professional judgment and interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, their families, other health care team members and the community are equally essential skills.
    8. Demonstrated organizational, prioritization, problem-solving and case management skills.
    9. Demonstrated flexibility and ability to work as a team player.
    10. Demonstrated interpretive and problem solving skills.
    11. Proven excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
    12. French speaking at an intermediate level is preferred. 
    13. Evidence of good attendance, a satisfactory performance history and a discipline-free record required.
