The Physician Assistant (PA) is a healthcare professional who works in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare providers to deliver high quality care to patients with complex multisystem traumatic injuries. The PA is an integral member of the trauma team from admission to discharge, working within a high performing team to optimize patient outcomes and deliver seamless care.
Specific activities of the role include but are not limited to:
- Providing direct patient care for patient that are admitted under the trauma service
- Collaborating with the interprofessional team in regards to care and disposition planning
- Participating in trauma/interprofessional rounds
- Liaising with consulting services & interprofessional team
- Communicating with patients and families with respect to care plans and general updates as needed
- Performing procedures as per specific delegation
- Performing tertiary surveys
- Documenting in patient care record, and writing physicians orders as per delegation
- Completing referrals, discharge summaries, transfer of care between different units and facilities
- Conducting health promotion and disease prevention activities (e.g. alcohol screening and brief intervention, mental health screening, screening for abuse)
- Assisting in repatriation of patient to receive care closer to home
- Supporting quality improvement initiatives
Qualifications/Skills
- Successful completion of National Certification Exam administered and accredited by Physician Assistant Council of Canada
- Minimum 1 year experience acute care trauma/general surgery preferred
- Current ACLS & ATLS preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
- Collaborative approach to teaching/learning, conflict management
- Demonstrated teaching, team-building and leadership skills
- Complex decision-making skills, excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills
