Summary of Duties:
Reporting to the Director of Environmental Support Services, the Manager of Environmental Support Services is responsible for planning and ensuring the ongoing provision of healthcare related services related to environmental cleaning and disinfection, general housekeeping, waste management, laundry and linen services, grounds property maintenance, flooring infrastructure renewal, and patient support services across the five campuses of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, as needed. Specifically, this role is responsible for:
- Formulating policies and procedures, developing schedules and systems, and planning the utilization of equipment, materials and human resources to generally manage the daily operations of the department assigned
- Hiring, training, developing, mentoring, and motivating varied leadership and front line service personnel to deliver and maintain related business activities in a complex, high-paced healthcare setting.
- Leading a team of professional Environmental Services support workers and Supervisors, providing instruction on achieving the ongoing objectives of the department
- Managing human and financial resources to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective service in support of patient care and clinical services
- Manages the assigned departmental budgets within established parameters, implementing cost controls, and addressing variances on an ongoing basis
- Cultivating an environment of strong teamwork and patient-focused customer service
- Implementing and maintaining a quality monitoring program designed to measure ongoing performance against established service metrics, and identifying opportunities for service improvement and cost reduction
- Fostering strong client relationships and excellent inter-departmental communication with the objective of furthering high quality service to all areas
- Managing matters of patient risk by addressing issues of both patient and occupational safety
- Implementing and maintaining an attendance management program that both supports staff and ensures service reliability for patients
- Establishing and maintaining departmental training programs that support the objectives of a high quality patient service
- Conducting regular leadership staff meetings to promote communication and information sharing throughout all levels
- Liaises with industry partners and hospital colleagues to benchmark metrics and leverage the latest innovations and technologies in optimizing levels of service
- Anticipates and plans for future departmental needs
- Responds to and communicates with clients and other stakeholders regarding related services and issues
Qualifications/Skills:
- A University degree in business or a related field, along with a professional designation in a related healthcare support services field.
- A minimum of five years related experience, preferably in a healthcare setting with well-rounded knowledge of all aspects of hospital operations.
- Experience in staff planning processes, negotiating collective agreements and dealing with human resource issues.
- Good communication and exceptional customer service skills are essential.
- Proven ability in conflict resolution, trouble-shooting and problem solving.
- Proficiency in working with multiple budgets, financial planning, and seizing opportunities for improvements and efficiencies.
- Good knowledge of hospital/healthcare related infection prevention and control standards and practices.
- Skill in developing policies, procedures, and emergency response plans.
- Good knowledge of risk management and quality control issues as they pertain to the environmental services field.
- Demonstrated leadership and change/project management skills
- Computer skills and knowledge of applicable software tools, including the Microsoft Office suite
- Working knowledge of budget management
