Summary of Duties

To provide electrical and electronics expertise and support to the Radiation Treatment Program at the Odette Cancer Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. The Electronics Technologist is responsible for performing a variety of duties related to preventative maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and testing of radiation therapy equipment. The position reports directly to the Head of the Department of Medical Physics.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, morning equipment start-up, correcting equipment malfunctions, maintaining an accurate service logbook, maintaining a comprehensive spare parts inventory, repairing electrical and electronic equipment, designing and constructing specialized electronic equipment and gathering machine performance data.  In-house training on treatment equipment will be provided.  Attending service training as required and maintaining skills and keeping current on new equipment is recommended. 

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Successful completion of a Diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology required.
  • Additional experience with radiation emitting equipment, computers electronics applications, high voltage, vacuum and electronic control systems, including microprocessor-based systems etc., preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair systems to the component level.
  • A high degree of mechanical aptitude and willingness to work around the radiation emitting equipment.  Required.
  • A minimum of 1-year service experience on linear accelerators, CT simulators, and brachytherapy equipment is preferred.
  • Considerable judgement and problem solving ability is required to identify, analyze and define problems and select the most appropriate solution.
  • Ability to perform fine motor movements for making fine adjustments and repairs to computer circuit boards, using small hand tools, manipulating small mechanical parts, data entry including logging problems and solutions found in a log book.
  • Demonstrated effective problem solving, conflict resolution and decision making practices
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels and ability to work well independently and in a team environment
