Summary of Duties

GIM has an opportunity for an Occupational Therapist/Physiotherapist Assistant (OTA/PTA) to participate in delivering care for patients assigned by the Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists across 3 GIM units.  The OTA/PTA will be responsible for

  • Completing exercise programs with patients and assist with gait training as prescribed by the physiotherapist
  • Carry out ADL training with patients to facilitate independence as prescribed by the occupational therapist
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to the program
  • Participates in continuous education opportunities to maintain a current and accurate knowledge base and applies best practices to the clinical environment
  • Assisting with patient lifting, transferring and transporting as required
  • Adherence to all assigned responsibilities
  • Preparing patients for treatment
  • Assisting the therapist in related duties
  • Monitors and reports any change in health status, performance or progress, or adverse reaction to the prescribed program and keeps the Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist fully informed of patient status
  • Maintaining timely charting and workload measurement
  • Monitoring and maintenance of equipment
  • Other duties as assigned, including general equipment monitoring and departmental duties

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Diploma from a recognized college for completion of the Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant program required
  • Minimum 2-year experience in acute care setting, preferably with GIM populations preferred
  • Experience with post-surgical clients an asset
  • Experience with patients with cognitive impairment and managing high risk behaviours preferred
  • Able to deal effectively with clients with challenging or conflicting situations
  • Proven ability to be responsible for carrying out assigned tasks with minimal supervision, across multiple units
  • Demonstrated understanding of rehabilitation principles and ability to collaborate and communicate effectively within an interprofessional team
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a safe manner
  • Knowledge of equipment functioning and experience inspecting equipment and treatment spaces for safety
  • Must be organized and able to complete tasks within the allocated timeframes
  • Excellent oral, written, and non-verbal communication skills required
