Summary of Duties

  • Nurses who are part of the Radiation Nursing Team will be expected to provide care to patients in several disease site groups; providing a broad range of ambulatory oncology nursing care services for cancer patients and their families in both the clinical environment and over the telephone at the Odette Cancer Centre. They will perform all aspects of patient care processes prescribed by physicians &/or Nurse Practitioners in compliance with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and the Division of Oncology Nursing. Nursing responsibilities include comprehensive health assessment, development of supportive & therapeutic patient & family relationships, management of cancer symptoms and treatment side effects, teaching & coaching, facilitating continuity of care & navigation of the health care system, and support with clinical decision making & patient advocacy. The Odette ambulatory oncology nurse is expected to engage in continuous quality improvement initiatives, leadership opportunities, and on-going professional development.
  • The nurse will collaborate with the interprofessional team in the management of oncology patients and their families throughout the trajectory of their cancer care to help address and manage physical, emotional, practical, psychological, informational, social, and spiritual needs. The nurse is accountable for the provision of compassionate and high quality nursing care through the use of evidence-based nursing intervention in compliance with oncology nursing competencies and CNO Standards of practice. Supporting patients and their families’ beyond the clinic environment through extensive telephone practice is critical for the supportive management of the patients undergoing cancer treatment and will be a core focus of nursing work within this role.
  • Any nurse hired in to this position, will be required to support patients in the Radiation Review Clinic and Radiation Nursing Assessment Office. This will include, but is not limited to the following: participating in both scheduled and drop-in encounters with patients receiving radiation therapy, acting as a clinical resource, conducting patient assessments, counselling patients and families, providing care and treatments, managing radiation side-effects, and evaluating outcomes. Supporting patients and their families beyond the clinic environment through extensive telephone practice is critical for the supportive management of the patients undergoing cancer treatment and will be a core aspect of nursing work within this role. The nurse may also be required to support patients in any of the other radiation-related clinics.

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Current registration with the College of Nurse of Ontario
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred
  • Experience in Oncology Nursing is strongly preferred
  • Experience in Ambulatory Care Nursing &/or Telepractice preferred
  • Canadian Nurses Association certification as Certified Oncology Nurse CON(C) an asset or willing to obtain
  • Must be flexible, adaptable, and have the ability to prioritize
  • IV insertion skills preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills necessary
  • Must be able to work well with others and collaborate as a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education and professional development important
  • Computer literacy and typing an asset
  • CPR – Basic Provider certification required
