The Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is responsible for preparing and delivering Basic Life Support classes focusing on how to respond in cardiac emergencies. They are responsible for planning, preparing and delivering BLS courses. They manage class logistics, and ensure quality and effectiveness of CPR training. The majority of classes are adult healthcare provider BLS, however select infant, child and Heartsaver CPR AED courses are offered The position reports to the Director of Interprofessional & Academic Education with oversight from the Education Lead, Nursing.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Schedules and posts available classes 3-4 months in advance 
  • Prepares teaching materials and equipment for each session and completes equipment cleaning per infection prevention and control standards
  • Delivers BLS courses and provides instruction on basic life support techniques, including CPR by facilitating hands on practice, teaching proper techniques for chest compressions, rescue breaths, and automated external debrillator use, and choking techniques for adult, child and infant for single rescuer and team rescue in a health care professional context
  • Evaluates performance including providing developmental feedback and time for remedial practice as needed and inputs pass/fail data upon course completion
  • Supports communication with attendees (e.g. sends course registration and reminder emails, fields questions and rebooking requests, and emails survey links post-class to gather feedback).
  • Collaborates with Nursing Education leadership to create advertizing materials/class promotion materials (e.g. posters, Sunnynet materials, wording to ensure clarity for learners)
  • Informs equipment/supply purchase and maintenance requirements (e.g. mannequin maintenance, repair and replacement, cleaning supplies, CPR manuals, Heart and Stroke Registration etc.) 
  • Maintains all records relating to courses taught per Heart and Stroke Agreements and Policies. Records include, but are not limited to, attendance rosters, evaluations/testing and exam results
  • Participates in monthly CPR team meetings, supports corporate updates (e.g. updates at Sunnybrook Education Advisory Committee meetings) and contributes to the ongoing development and enhancement of the CPR program
  • Stays updated on the latest CPR guidelines and best practices, Heart and Stroke requirements, and Sunnybrook’s Code Blue procedures to ensure accurate and effective training, compliance with Heart and Stroke requirements, support alignment of curriculum with facility policies and procedures, and introduce ongoing/continuous quality improvements based on learner evaluations and identified corporate needs
     

Qualifications/Skills:
•    High school diploma is required and an undergraduate degree/diploma is strongly preferred
•    A minimum of 3 years of BLS teaching experience is required
•    Experience working as a health professional or in a health related role or field is preferred
•    Certification as a BLS Instructor with the Heart & Stroke Foundation is required 
•    First aid training from an authorized provider (e.g. Red Cross or Lifesaving Society) is required
•    Must have strong knowledge of CPR techniques including chest compressions, rescue breaths and AED use
•    Should have proficiency in using instructional tools and education technology for delivering CPR training
•    Should have knowledge of adult education principles, the ability to adapt teaching strategies for different learners, and be able to provide timely, relevant and actionable feedback
•    Must be able to create a supportive learning environment
•    Excellent communication, problem solving & time management are skills required
