Medical Physicist - Regular Full-time (3 positions)
The Medical Physics Department at the Odette Cancer Centre (OCC) in Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is seeking three permanent full-time qualified medical physicists to join our team in the busiest Radiation Treatment Program (RTP) in Canada. Successful applicants will be fully engaged with our clinical program and will be expected to lead the clinical implementation of novel technologies. They will contribute to our academic mission through participation in our medical physics and radiation oncology residency programs, and by undertaking innovative research in radiation oncology physics.
Summary of Duties
The OCC is a comprehensive cancer centre whose Radiation Treatment Program (RTP) serves over 7500 new patients per year. The Medical Physics department comprises twenty-four medical physicists, five physics associates, five mechanical technologists, six electronics technologists, four physics IT personnel, two administrative assistants, and physics residents and graduate students. We are currently commissioning our new RayStation external beam treatment planning system and will install three new liancs in 2025/26. The RTP’s implementation of MR in radiotherapy is supported by its MR-linac and three MR-simulators.
The Medical Physics Department and the RTP excel in the use of MR in radiotherapy, for simulation and for treatment planning. The Program has innovative clinical and research programs in SBRT for primary and metastatic disease; brain radiosurgery; and adaptive radiotherapy on MR and CT platforms. The Department provides specialized support for a dedicated MR-guided brachytherapy suite for extensive programs in both HDR and LDR brachytherapy, as well as a busy Gamma Knife program.
Clinical duties include: acceptance and commissioning of equipment; development and clinical implementation of new technologies and techniques; physics support for all services offered within the RTP; consultation with radiation therapists and oncologists; quality improvement; and participation in disease site teams. Medical physicists in our program work closely with radiation oncologists and clinical specialist radiotherapists to implement the latest technologies in radiotherapy for our patients.
The successful candidate will be required to seek an academic appointment at the University of Toronto Department of Radiation Oncology (UTDRO), and will participate in UTDRO’s CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Residency Program and the Radiation Oncology Residency Program. Academic appointments within other departments at the University of Toronto and at Toronto Metropolitan University are possible, as is appointment to the Sunnybrook Research Institute. The University of Toronto Department of Medical Biophysics has recently opened a CAMPEP-accredited graduate program of study.
Qualifications/Skills
Candidates must be eligible for certification as a qualified medical physicist in Canada. Candidates must have superior leadership and communication skills and be able to establish and grow effective working relationships as a member of a transdisciplinary team. Medical physicists who excel in project management, quality improvement, change management, research, and teaching are encouraged to apply. This is an excellent opportunity to work at a large academic centre as part of a team of diverse professionals who share patient-centered goals. Toronto is the most multiculturally diverse city in the world, and is a centre for commerce, arts, academia and information technology.
