Overview: Reporting to the Program Director of the Azrieli Brain Medicine Program (herein referred to as ‘the Program’), the Research and Evaluation Lead will spearhead the development and advancement of this novel and innovative initiative. The program focuses on fellowship education, clinical care models and healthcare improvement within the emerging field of brain medicine. The focus of the Program is to integrate education and care amongst the brain medicine specialties: neurology, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurosurgery and geriatrics. In this key role, the Research and Evaluation Lead will provide expert guidance and technical expertise in the design and execution of research and evaluation projects, fostering an environment of academic excellence and innovation in the field of Brain Medicine. The work will directly contribute to the development and success of this innovative initiative, driving advancements in clinical care and education within the field of brain medicine.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research and Evaluation Design and Guidance
- Develop and advance quality improvement and evaluative science frameworks for the Brain Medicine program
- Lead the programmatic evaluation by identifying appropriate outcome measures and employing relevant evaluative science methodology
- Provide executive oversight for all ongoing and upcoming research studies within the Brain Medicine program
- Collaborate with fellows, physicians, research faculty and staff, to develop and refine research questions, hypotheses, protocols, outcome measures, data collection and analysis related to Brain Medicine
- Design research studies using qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate the impact of the brain medicine model on clinical care, research and education, and health systems level with a focus on outcome measures
- Oversee the development of study protocols, including informed consent forms for participant recruitment, enrolment and consent processes
- Create methodologies and evaluation tools to measure program process, outcome, cost/benefit, and overall effectiveness
- Mentor fellows, residents, summer students, research coordinators and other trainees throughout their research project lifecycle
- Conduct literature reviews and environmental scans to inform research directions and initiatives
- Data Management
- Lead grant writing efforts, identifying and securing new funding sources in a timely and effective manner
- Lead manuscript preparation, literature reviews, proposal development and conference presentations
- Perform data preparation, analysis, interpretation and presentations for dissemination
- Direct the design and implementation of databases for data collection, verification along and chart review
- Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and compliance with relevant regulations and standards
- Project Coordination
- Manage timelines and milestones for research and evaluation projects to ensure timely delivery
- Build and maintain cross-institutional research project collaborations by supporting stakeholder meetings and shared deliverables
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations, and liaise with stakeholders including patient partners, hospital administrators, government stakeholders and funders to facilitate knowledge translation
- Submit progress reports on the success metrics of the research program to relevant granting agencies
- Lead bi-weekly lab meetings to foster collaboration, provide updates on ongoing projects, and guide research team members.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including academic collaborators and funding bodies on furthering the research program
- Regulatory Compliance
- Manage ethics review submissions and service agreements/contracts across institutions to support the program’s research objectives
- Supervise and support fellows, students or support faculty and staff in preparing and submitting ethics applications, amendments, and renewals in a timely manner
- Ensure all research and evaluation activities adhere to institutional, ethical, and regulatory guidelines
- Publication and Dissemination
- Lead the preparation and submission of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, as well as abstracts and presentations for conferences and posters
- Promote knowledge mobilization efforts by disseminating research findings through relevant/appropriate channels, including academic and public platforms.
Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent degree in research and evaluation (a Master’s degree plus relevant experience will also be considered)
- Experience in quality implementation science evaluation is an asset
- Experience in quality improvement, health systems or health education research and evaluation
- Experience in brain medicine, neurology, psychiatry, or a related field is not required but is considered an asset
- Strong understanding of research methodologies, statistical analysis and regulatory requirements
- Proven track record of academic presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Excellent organizational, project management and communication skills
- Proficiency in statistical analysis software and data management tools
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, innovative and collaborative culture
