Summary of Duties

The Odette Cancer Program (OCP) is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) to support our Genitorurinary Medical Oncology site with prostate cancer patients in a 2 year temporary full-time role. The NP functions in an expanded nursing role within OCP demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to formulate clinical decisions. In collaboration with the interprofessional team, the NP is responsible for managing, in a comprehensive manner, the health needs of patients receiving prostate cancer medical oncology care. The NP is responsible for leading the provision of person-centred care by completing comprehensive assessments, ordering diagnostic tests and implementing therapeutic plans of care. The NP is an advanced practice role designed to contribute to the quality of patient care through practice, education, research and leadership practices according to the philosophy and standards of Sunnybrook. Along with the clinical responsibilities, this NP position will also include research-related responsibilities as described below. Expected role split is 65% clinical, 35% research.

 

Clinical Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct specialized patient care for the prostate cancer patient population within the Genitourinary Medical Oncology site
  • Utilizes a high degree of knowledge, skill and competence within the full scope of the NP role conducting assessments, developing diagnostic and therapeutic care plans for patients with metastatic prostate cancer on active treatment
  • Monitors and manages prostate cancer patients with stable disease on androgen receptor pathway inhibitor therapy
  • Conducts follow-up visits, manage treatment side effects, and coordinates care
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to evolving patient needs and unit demands
  • Promotes wellness and health promotion in order to provide exemplary quality care through the application of advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge and skills
  • Communicates with patients, families and healthcare providers within the purview of patient care including comprehensive assessment, medical management, counselling and referrals over the phone and other virtual avenues
  • Demonstrates sound clinical reasoning and current evidence in decision making, planning and implementing care
  • Coordinates with nurses and interprofessional team to stimulate interest and provide innovative learning opportunities to integrate research findings, theory and technique for advanced patient care
  • Provides leadership in the development of quality improvement initiatives, policies and procedures and best practices
  • Collaborates with interprofessional team and unit leaders in coordinating and providing care for patients and to advance local, program and organizational goals and objectives
  • Supports leaders and point-of care staff by providing coordination, education and guidance in quality improvement projects

 

Research-related Roles and Responsibilities:

Genetic Testing Coordination

  • Coordinates genetic testing for patients with prostate cancer newly referred to the medical oncology service
  • Provides patient education on genetic testing, including the mainstreaming model (germline) and somatic testing
  • Organizes blood sample collection for germline testing
  • Locates and coordinates access to prostate cancer tissue samples for somatic testing
  • Communicates test results to patients and incorporate findings into care plans

Quality Improvement & Data Collection

  • Leads questionnaire-based patient satisfaction surveys before and after transitioning care from oncologist-led to NP-led care model (3- and 6-month intervals) for patients on stable therapy
  • Collects and analyzes data on testing rates and timelines (target: ≥85% of eligible patients tested within 6 months)
  • Compares outcomes with historical controls to evaluate program effectiveness
  • Contributes to data analysis and preparation of reports for internal stakeholders, academic conferences, and peer-reviewed publications

 

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Current College of Nurses of Ontario registration in the extended class (EC) as an NP (adult) required
  • Master in Nursing/Nurse Practitioner (MN-NP) or Masters of Science in Nursing with successful completion of a post Master’s Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program required
  • Relevant genitourinary (prostate) oncology experience, systemic, ambulatory or acute care nursing experience in a hospital environment an asset
  • Expert knowledge and clinical skills in managing symptoms and complex patient care needs
  • Demonstrated experience through roles of advanced practitioner, educator, researcher and leader
  • Ability to function collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team and practice in a self-directed manner
  • Excellent complex decision-making skills, interpersonal, team-building, leadership and oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interest in clinical research and academic presentation
  • Knowledge and experience in the research or clinical trial process an asset
