Position Summary

Would you like to help invent the future of healthcare? The Focused Ultrasound Lab at Sunnybrook Research Institute is developing a revolutionary medical device to non-invasively treat brain tumours and a variety of neurological disorders using focused ultrasound (FUS). The FUS Lab is now seeking a Team Lead for the Benchtop Team. This leadership position will oversee all aspects of benchtop experimental design and execution, quality assurance of transducers and phased arrays, and integration of systems for pre-clinical and clinical applications.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the scientific rigor, reliability, and translational impact of our research program. They will provide strategic and technical leadership, coordinate closely with fabrication, hardware, software, and clinical teams, mentor team members, and contribute to scholarly outputs through peer-reviewed publications.

Summary of Duties

 
  • Leadership & Team Management
    • Lead a multidisciplinary bench top team.
    • Establish priorities, timelines, and deliverables for ongoing and new projects.
    • Provide training to team members in the use of laboratory equipment for ultrasound transducer characterization and calibration
  • Experimental Design, Simulation & Execution
    • Direct the design, planning, and implementation of benchtop experiments in focused ultrasound.
    • Conduct computational simulations to optimize experimental design and performance.
    • Implement robotic platforms to enhance precision and efficiency in experimental workflows and fabrication processes.
    • Perform data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation to inform project goals.
  • Quality Assurance & System Validation
    • Develop and implement quality assurance protocols for transducers, phased arrays, and integrated ultrasound systems.
    • Ensure compliance with institutional and research standards for reproducibility and accuracy.
    • Coordinate with fabrication, hardware, and software teams to validate and optimize system performance.
  • Collaboration & Clinical Translation
    • Work closely with the clinical research team to ensure bench top findings directly inform and support clinical trials.
    • Contribute to multidisciplinary project planning and problem solving.
  • Scholarly Communication
    • Write and co-author academic articles for peer-reviewed journals and prepare technical reports.
 

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree (PhD preferred; MSc with extensive experience considered) in Physics, Medical Biophysics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in transducer and phased array design, development and characterization, or medical device-related work.
  • Demonstrated expertise in experimental design, instrumentation, and data analysis.
  • Proven experience in quality assurance, system testing, and/or medical device validation.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing research teams or mentoring trainees.
  • Strong written communication skills with a track record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, scientists, and clinicians.
