A postdoctoral fellowship is available with Dr. Baiju Shah at the Sunnybrook Research Institute. Dr Shah is an endocrinologist at Sunnybrook, a Senior Scientist at ICES, and a Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. He holds the Novo Nordisk Research Chair in Equitable Care of Diabetes and Related Conditions from the University of Toronto Mississauga’s Network for Health Populations (NHP) (https://healthypopulationsnetwork.utoronto.ca/).   The Mission of the NHP is to reduce inequities in risk and burden of diabetes and related cardiometabolic conditions across the lifespan, through better care, lower risk factors, and healthier living environments in Peel Region and beyond.

Dr Shah’s research program addresses the clinical care pillar of this mission. His work seeks to develop and evaluate innovative strategies to increase access to, improve quality of, and reduce inequities in diabetes care. This research program incorporates health services research, clinical epidemiology, and implementation science methodologies. The work involves partnerships with healthcare providers, community and public health agencies, decision makers, and people with lived experience to ensure that the research address community priorities and is actionable for spread and scale. The successful postdoctoral fellow will join Dr Shah’s research program to contribute to this work and gain skills and experience in qualitative research and implementation science.  

Responsibilities and Opportunities:

  • In collaboration with the Dr Shah and research team, develop specific research questions and study protocols that align with objectives of the research program.
  • Plan and lead research projects, working with team members to move projects forward in a timely manner.
  • Support data acquisition and conduct data analyses under the supervision and direction of the broader research team.
  • Conduct knowledge translation activities by disseminating the results of research to community partners and to the wider scientific community, including opportunities to present research at seminars and conferences.  
  • Lead manuscript preparation and submission, including presentation of data in tables and figures.
  • Lead and participate in team meetings by facilitating discussions that drive action, advance project goals, and ensures productive collaboration.
  • Maintains clear knowledge and understanding of regulations and policies pertaining to research ethics and confidentiality.
  • Gain experience in writing/submitting research grant applications and awards.
  • Participate in learning, training, and professional development opportunities offered by SRI and NHP.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A PhD in a relevant field completed within the previous five years.
  • Knowledge and experience in diabetes or related cardiometabolic conditions.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting qualitative research and/or implementation science research. Experience with mixed methods research is an asset.
  • Familiarity with conceptual frameworks used in implementation science and public health.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, execute and manage research projects.
  • Demonstrated data management skills.
  • Experience in several aspects of research study development, initiation, execution, analysis and interpretation is required.
  • Excellent academic writing skills, including previous experience with manuscript and report preparation.
  • Ability to frame research for relevance to broad knowledge-user audiences.
  • Exceptional capacity for critical thinking and generating new ideas, with keen attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent project management skills, including strong organizational aptitude.
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Interest in contributing to trainee and student supervision.
