POSITION SUMMARY
The Division of Medical Oncology seeks a certified Physician Assistant (CCPA) to join its established gastrointestinal (GI) medical oncology and clinical trials program. Our organization is seeking a qualified PA to collaborate in the care of patients with GI cancers (gastric, hepatobiliary, pancreas, colorectal), with a focus on improving clinical trial opportunities for our patients. The presence of a PA will enhance patient participation in clinical trials, which aligns with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre’s Strategic Plan to integrate Personalized & Precise Treatments into clinical care.
The PA staff will join outpatient operations and our multidisciplinary health team to ensure longitudinal patient care and foster improved access to clinical trials. The PA will work in collaboration with a team of 6 medical oncologists, clinical fellows, residents, and trainees.
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of academic activities. Clinical services will be provided to patients diagnosed with GI malignancies under the direct supervision of the GI Medical Oncology attending physicians and dually report to the Operations Lead of the Odette Cancer Care Program.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Participate in outpatient GI medical oncology clinics to care for patients with GI malignancies undergoing systemic therapy and follow-up
- Conduct comprehensive history and physical assessments and interpret findings with an oncologic focus under the supervision of GI medical oncologists
- Formulate a treatment and management plan based on assessment and investigations, availability of services and needs of each patient
- Collaborate with patients and the multidisciplinary health team outside of clinic to ensure seamless, longitudinal care (care coordination, follow-up phone calls, clinic preparation, paperwork, etc.)
- Assess and recruit new patients with GI malignancies for participation in Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of novel anti-cancer therapies
- Assist GI clinical trial team members in completing clinical trial requirements and facilitating patient care such as obtaining samples, conducting focused assessments, organizing consultations, and/or ordering diagnostic tests
