Summary of Duties:

The Fire Prevention Coordinator will; conduct inspections of a variety of occupancies for compliance with the Ontario Fire Code and other relevant legislation and standards. Discuss and provide advice to users and facility representative on violations and unsafe conditions. Make recommendations, and provide instruction on compliance and applicable fire safety practices. Be responsible for sprinkler system and fire alarm panel monitoring and device maintenance and repair scheduling, as well as record keeping and training. Participate in the assessment and prioritization of long-term maintenance plans for existing buildings. Review plans for code compliance and fire safety for new buildings and renovations. Attend project meetings to review life safety system requirements with contractors and project consultants. Assist in coordinating of verification testing, review and assesse acceptance tests. Deliver fire and life safety training, presentations and demonstrations. Participate in fire safety education programs, mock drills and event debriefings. Conduct fire drills and maintain records. Review and maintains detailed documentation for fire alarm testing, maintenance and corrective action. Inspect, monitor and maintain fire alarm and other fire protection systems. Assist in the investigation of fires / alarm activations, determining cause and origin, preparing reports detailing root cause.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Diploma in Fire Protection Engineering or equivalent Preferred.
  • Certification as a Fire Alarm Technician Preferred.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a fire/life safety related role is required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and Ontario Fire Code as well as knowledge NFPA and CSA standards is required.
  • Experience working in Health Care is an asset.
  • Experience in the function, maintenance and operation of sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems and other fire protection systems.
  • Experience delivering training and developing Fire Prevention Programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret building plans and specifications.
  • Proficient in chairing meetings, producing agendas and minutes.
  • Effective in leading and influencing people
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be highly self-disciplined, motivated, an active thinker, progressive problem solver and able to set priorities.
