Summary of Duties

The Ross Tilley Burn Centre seeks a Canadian Certified Physician Assistant to join their high functioning, interprofessional team. The PA is a hospital employee and operates under the license of the Supervising Physicians via Direct Orders and Medical Directives., The PA operationally reports to the Patient Care Manager on the Ross Tilley Burn Centre. Working collaboratively with other members of the interprofessional care team, the PA carries out the following responsibilities:

 

Clinical Practice

  • Attends interprofessional patient rounds daily
  • Performs and documents patient history, physical examinations and assessment of Burn Service patients.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory, radiographic, and other diagnostic tests.
  • Performs diagnostic and stabilization procedures as necessary based on ACLS and ABLS guidelines.
  • Orders medications and treatments that include all approved formulary medications, wound care products, in accordance with current guidelines and prescribing restrictions and in consultation with burn service physicians.
  • Collaborates with interprofessional team in regards to disposition planning, including attending weekly disposition rounds
  • Develops and reviews documented plan of care and consults with attending burn surgeon, patients and families
  • Participates and leads goals of care discussions and advanced care planning with patients and their families and/or substitute decision makers
  • Aids in completing paperwork for all Burn Service patients, including patients they may not have seen personally, by reviewing patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Performs procedures under the supervision of the burn attending physician. Procedures may be delegated to the PA once formal competency verification is completed. Procedures may include but are not limited to– central and arterial line insertions, escharotomies, bronchoscopy, and advancedwound care.
  • Participates and leads in burn resuscitation in the dedicated burn unit hydrotherapy room while adhering to ABLS guidelines.
  • May be required to support clinical activities in outpatient clinic and/or burn operating room
  • Embraces change and continuously identifies opportunities for improvement by demonstrating a commitment to creativity and innovation.
  • Efficiently and effectively uses resources to ensure the financial viability of the Burn Service.
  • Responds to requests for evaluation and management of potential Burn Service patients in the ED, unit, outpatient setting and Critical referral visits.
  • Assists with repatriation process for appropriate patients

 

Consultation

The PA:

  • In collaboration with nurses, physicians, and other members of the burn team, develops, promotes, and maintains interdisciplinary teamwork using effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates commitment to the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre mission and ongoing initiatives related to clinical practice, education, and research.
  • Serves as a consultant and liaison between the Burn Service and clinical, ancillary, and support services.
  • Attends and participates in Burn Steering Committee and other working groups as required; meeting the 50% attendance requirement that will be reviewed at yearly job performance evaluation

 

Education:

The PA:

  • Opportunities to participate in educational advancement – including American Burn Association conferences, weekly teaching sessions from burn service attendings, grand rounds, unit in-services.
  • Actively participates in the educational process of healthcare profession students.
  • Obtains and documents continuing education hours required to maintain certification.
  • Serves as a patient/family liaison in education of Burn Service patients and their families.
  • Develops new patient education materials in collaboration with the burn advanced practice nurses
  • Serves as a resource to staff and patients on burn related subjects and resources available.
  • PA presents one burn education rounds annually.

 

Research:

The PA:

  • Promotes and participates in burn research.
  • Leads and supports quality improvement initiatives. Develops at least one performance improvement project/year.
  • Promotes and participates in presentation and publication of burn related activities; one every three years per provider.

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Certified the Physician Assistants Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Membership with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants
  • Current ACLS required
  • Current ABLS required within first year
  • Current ATLS preferred
  • Experience in trauma is preferred
  • Previous experience and training in a health discipline preferred
  • Collaborative approach to teaching/learning, conflict management
  • Demonstrated teaching, team-building and leadership skills
  • Complex decision-making skills, excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills
