Summary of Duties
The Spiritual Care Practitioner is responsible to assess and provide spiritual care and emotional support for patients, families and staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Bayview, Holland and RCC campuses). The Spiritual Care Practitioner assumes an active role in the Spiritual Care Team and assigned units while demonstrating a commitment to compassionate, person-centered care within an inter-professional context. This position reports to the Professional Leader and Manager for acute care Spiritual & Religious Care Department.
- Provides spiritual care and supportive counseling to support patients and their families, team members and other health care providers.
- Assesses the spiritual and religious care needs of patients and their significant others and offers care directly and/or makes appropriate referrals to other members of the inter-professional team and/or to community partners.
- Functions in a multi-faith environment to ensure patients and families have access to spiritual/religious and cultural rituals and services as appropriate or requested
- Assists in the co-ordination of special bereavement functions such as Memorial Services.
- Participates in inter-professional team meetings incorporating the patient/family spiritual needs into the overall care plan.
- Advances current professional expertise and specialized knowledge in spiritual care.
Qualifications/Skills
- Master’s Degree in Divinity or related field preferred
- Certified as Specialist in Spiritual Care with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC), or its USA equivalent preferred
- 2 Advanced CPE Units preferred
- Registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists in Ontario (CRPO) practicing in Spiritual Care preferred.
- Experience providing spiritual care in a busy healthcare environment.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, emotional intelligence, critical thinking and time management skills
- Compassionate, Person-centered and Family focused care philosophy required
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of patients, families and health care staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in inter-professional teams.
- Must be proficient in writing, reading and speaking English
- Multi-lingual abilities are an asset
