Summary of Duties
As part of the ED One Team at Sunnybrook the physiotherapist would enhance the care of vulnerable seniors and complex patients within the Emergency Department (ED). As part of interprofessional ED team, the physiotherapist will collaborate with patients, family and ED staff to prioritize the safe and effective mobilization of admitted patients, facilitate patient discharges from the ED (in collaboration with the ED One Team), and/or begin assessments for appropriate admissions in order to improve patient flow and outcomes. The physiotherapist actively participates in inter-professional team activities such as team meetings, clinical rounds, team huddles and quality improvement initiatives in the ED. The selected individual will participate in continuing professional development activities including the provision of clinical and educational in-services that foster ongoing learning, professionalism, interprofessional collaborations, and best practices in physiotherapy for acute care patients. The physiotherapist will participate in the supervision and education of physiotherapy students on an ongoing basis as appropriate. They will be an expert resource for; staff, students, and other health care providers related to physiotherapy. They will participate in discipline-specific activities within Physiotherapy Services and practice in accordance with the College of Physiotherapy of Ontario standards of practice.
Qualifications/Skills
- MSc[PT] or equivalent
- Registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario
- Rostered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario for Tracheal Suctioning and Administering a Substance by Inhalation
- One to two years of general acute care physiotherapy experience preferred
- Assessment and treatment experience with older adults (65 years+) who have complex health issues, including confusion, dementia, delirium, falls, weakness and decreased mobility or ambulation
- Strong ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Superior ability to quickly build trusting relationships as a new team member into an established interprofessional team environment
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
- Member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association preferred
