Physiotherapist - Outpatient Services - Regular full-time 2024-10006

Summary of Duties

The Physiotherapist is responsible for carrying out professional assessments and treatment programs in the outpatient treatment areas.  The main clinical area of focus is the musculoskeletal and trauma population, other populations including, transplant, neurological/stroke, burns, complex care, oncology, and/or amputee may be part of the caseload.  Broad ranges of treatment techniques are utilized to alleviate pain and restore movement, strength and function according to rehabilitation goals with a specific focus on return-to-work.  

Key Responsibilities:

1. Conduct interdisciplinary (Physician and Allied Health Professional) assessment and treatment of clients with musculoskeletal disorders referred by third-party payers (eg. Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), Motor Vehicle Collision [MVC], Insurers,;
2. Prepare initial, follow-up, progress and discharge reports outlining findings, recommendations and return to work planning within specified timelines and ensure all documentation is aligned with College of Physiotherapists of Ontario and Sunnybrook standards;
3. Identify, in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, need for referral to other physician specialists and services;
4. Develop, in collaboration with interdisciplinary team, patient-centred exercise programs for active rehabilitation with a focus on individualized work conditioning/hardening, injury prevention and an early and safe return to work;
5. Determine, in collaboration with interdisciplinary team, functional abilities, restrictions and limitations relating to return-to-work planning
6. Liaise with referral sources (i.e. case managers, nurse consultants, insurance adjustors) and community providers to discuss patient’s status and ensure their needs are met;
7. Educate clients and their families, hospital staff and the community regarding musculoskeletal disorders and preventative healthcare;
8. Maintain safety and cleanliness of work environment, including equipment;
9. Collaborate with the Interdisciplinary team to focus on evidence-based outcome-oriented recommendations for clients and referral sources;
10. Follow clinic business processes and workflows; and
11. Direct the daily activities of students/interns in the department, as required.
12. Manage a patient caseload in relation to the referral base.
13. Participate actively in the clinical teaching and indirect supervision of PT and PTA students and volunteers.
14. Participate in team building and interdisciplinary team activities (e.g. team meetings, quality, education) as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
15. Be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of employees, patients, Sisters, students, volunteers, physicians and visitors including but not limited to: compliance with the safety standards of the Hospital and applicable legislation.
16. Conduct their work in a safe manner; prevention, identification and reporting of safety issues and problems; taking corrective action, where possible; attendance at safety meetings / training / updates in accordance with the Hospital’s standards.

Qualifications/Skills

1. Successful completion of a post-secondary degree from an accredited physical therapy program or equivalent education as recognized by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
2. Current registration in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. 
3. Minimum 3 years of related clinical experience in assessment and treatment with a primarily orthopedic case load in an Outpatient setting.
4. Extensive experience with third party insurers (e.g., WSIB, MVA) including assessment treatment and report writing
5. Experience with Amputee/trauma population preferred.
6. Excellent professional judgement and interpersonal communication skills with clients, families, team members and community partners.
7. Competence in the practice of evidence based physiotherapy, with the application of appropriate practice models and outcome measures.
8. Good time management and organizational skills.
9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
10. Evidence of good attendance, a satisfactory performance history and a discipline-free record required.
11. Demonstrated commitment to Person Centered Care approach and principles.
