Summary of Duties

The Odette Cancer Program is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) to support the expansion of our Oncology Urgent Care (ONUC) clinic. The Nurse Practitioner functions in an expanded nursing role within the Odette Cancer Program demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to formulate clinical decisions surrounding palliative care and acute symptom management. In collaboration with the interprofessional team, the NP is responsible for managing, in a comprehensive manner the health needs of medical, radiation and gynecologic oncology patients. The NP is responsible for leading the provision of person-centred care by completing comprehensive assessments, ordering diagnostic tests and implementing therapeutic plans of care. The NP is an advanced practice role designed to contribute to the quality of patient care through practice, education, research and leadership practices according to the philosophy and standards of Sunnybrook.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Direct specialized patient care for the urgent needs of the outpatient medical, radiation and Gynecologic oncology patient population
  • Utilizes a high degree of knowledge, skill and competence in assessing and managing complications of disease and treatment
  • Requires flexibility and adaptability to evolving patient needs and unit demands 
  • Practices within the full scope of the NP role conducting assessments, developing diagnoses and therapeutic care plans
  • Promotes wellness and health promotion in order to provide exemplary quality care through the application of advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge and skills
  • Communicates with patients, families, and healthcare providers within the purview of patient care including comprehensive assessment, medical management, counselling, and referrals over the phone and other virtual avenues
  • Demonstrates sound clinical reasoning and current evidence in decision making, planning and implementing care.
  • Coordinates with nurses and interprofessional team to stimulate interest and provide innovative learning opportunities to integrate research findings, theory, and technique for advanced patient care
  • Provides leadership in the development of quality improvement initiatives, policies and procedures and best practices.
  • Collaborates with Interprofessional Team and unit leaders in coordinating and providing care for patients and to advance local, program and organizational goals and objectives
  • Support leaders and point-of care staff by providing coordination, education and guidance in quality improvement projects

 

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Current College of Nurses of Ontario registration in the extended class (EC) as an NP (adult) required
  • Master in Nursing/Nurse Practitioner (MN-NP) or Masters of Science in Nursing with successful completion of a post Master’s Acute
  • Relevant oncology, ambulatory, or acute care/urgent care  nursing experience preferred
  • Expert knowledge and clinical skills in managing symptoms and complex patient care needs
  • Demonstrated experience through roles of advanced practitioner, educator, researcher and leader
  • Ability to function collaboratively within an interprofessional  team and practice in a self-directed manner
  • Excellent complex decision-making skills, interpersonal, team-building, leadership, and oral and written communication skills
