Summary of Duties
•    Receive and review complaints, hazard reports and incident investigations, advising and assisting in identification, evaluation and control of hazards as required. 
•    Assist individual departments in the implementation of the corporate health and safety program. 
•    Coordinate corporate asbestos program, including policy, procedures, permit system and update surveys. 
•    Serve as a resource to Corporate Planning and Plant Operations Departments with regard to health and safety aspects of construction, renovation and maintenance projects. 
•    Act as a Resource to the Joint Occupational Health & Safety committee, departmental and corporate safety committees (i.e. LASER, Radiation Safety). 
•    Schedule and manage JOHSC inspections for all sites. 
•    Maybe required to develop safety plans as part of the corporate Violence Prevention Program.  
•    Conduct proactive job safety analyses, workplace inspections and audits. 
•    Perform ergonomic assessments and physical demands analyses. 
•    Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of health and safety policies, procedures, program materials and risk assessments. 
•    Conduct industrial hygiene monitoring such as noise surveys and indoor air quality assessments (including investigating potential water damage)
•    Maybe required to assist with Safety related issues at the Holland Centre, Reactivation Care Centre and St. John’s Rehab sites. 
•    Participates in the maintenance of the departmental intranet website. 
•    Liaison with the Ministry of Labour and external auditors as required.  

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Post-Secondary degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field required
  • CRSP, CIH or ROH considered an asset
  • Significant recent, related health & safety experience in a unionized environment required
  • Previous experience with safety in a hospital/healthcare setting preferred
  • Significant experience working with joint health and safety committees required
  • Strong understanding of, and experience applying Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislation / regulations
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in conducting job safety analyses, indoor air quality surveys, incident investigations, and a variety of inspections and audits
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work collaboratively with a variety of individuals at various levels of an organization
  • Practical experience with asbestos and/or construction projects required
  • Computer literate (MS Excel, Powerpoint, Word and Parklane)
  • Certified in Fit Testing considered an asset.
